MT2 OAs our fully appointed oval hole A-model, the MT2 O includes a high-gloss lacquer finish and full bindings. Built with select Red spruce and eastern maples, these mandolins produce a rich and vibrant tone that is well-suited for celtic, old-time, classical and jazz styles.
Mandolin Top Voicing
From the starting point of the wood's density and rigidity, each mandolin top is hand selected, evaluated, and carved to its own unique thickness; maximizing the tonal potential of each top. An Adirondack spruce top provides excellent clarity and focus with lots of projection and headroom.
Each of our mandolins, from our most affordable model to the highest end, are built with the finest tonewoods available. Each wood is acquired, acclimated, and hand selected by master luthiers who pick each component with the whole tonality of the end instrument in mind.
A combination of exacting PLEK machine leveling and hand fret dressing ensure a comfortable setup and silky fret feel. A compound 7-11 5/8 fingerboard radius, V shaped neck profile, and 1 9/16 inch string spacing creates an exceptional playability that is versatile for a wide range of styles.
High Gloss Finish
By meticulously hand-sanding between coats, our nitrocellulose lacquer finishes measure between .005 and .007 thousandths in final thickness, maximizing acoustical response while providing excellent protection and aesthetics.
Each mandolin bridge and pickguard are handmade of solid ebony here in the Collings shop. Our tailpieces offer convenient top loading and are made of bronze to enhance string resonance. Gotoh tuners provide a smooth tuning feel and reliable operation.
The Collings MT2 features a fully bound top & back, neck and peghead with black and white purfling. Mother of pearl dot fingerboard inlays and a Flourish peghead inlay complete the upscale aesthetics.
An oval sound-hole is paired with X-style bracing to create a warm, open tonal response with rich overtones and an enhanced presence in the bass and low mids. A wide 1 3/16 inch nut and 13 fret neck join further distinguish the feel and tone of our oval hole mandolins from their F-style counterparts.
